Thanks for replying, Eliza! Yep, burn out is always a danger - you want to take advantage of good writing days but also ensure you can have a semi-decent one the following day. :)

[...] And on a happier TV junkie note, some fabulous bits of Cougar Town Season 3. (I may have mentioned my love of this show previously. It is very very funny, and has a super cast. YAY for season 3!) Blog this! Bookmark on Delicious [...]

Do you how how deeply disturbed I would be if Caroline B. Cooney turned out not to be real? I do prefer her later, non-horror stuff in general though.

Yes, Thoroughbred was good about crediting its ghostwriters, all except for the book where they killed off Wonder, which was written by "Brook James," and no one's ever fessed up to that one.

Others, let's see. The Boxcar Children (Albert Whitman) makes no bones about the fact that Gertrude Chandler Warner is dead (I guess that would be kind of hard to hide), but as far as I remember they don't acknowledge the ghosties in any way. I don't think it's a big secret -- IIRC, I once read on Candice F. Ransom website that she is one of the Boxcar Children writers -- but they don't make a big deal of it either. Possibly they think the target age group is too young to care.

I've always assumed publishers are more transparent about it these days because it would be harder to keep it a secret (unlike Stratmeyer in the early 1900's or even up through Ann M.). Or maybe authors are more demanding, and rightly so.

If I'm actively writing, 2k a day.I work full time, so that's not every day. It's usually the chapter that finds its way onto paper. I burn out if I try to write more, although sometimes I break that habit if the story is flowing freely!

wow Claire, this is such a good post. I didn't realise half of those books were ghostwritten - shows how naive I am lol. I think when it comes to ghostwriting for series etc. - both authors (creator & ghost writer) should be given equal billing. Plenty of books out there who have two authors names on the front cover!

Now I'll be going through all of my childhood favs to see if they are ghostwritten lol!!

Thanks Marese - love hearing about how people work! :) Know some people who can't work on different projects within one day, others who find it helps motivation-wise. It's all so varied, and each day can be different too.

I like thinking in chapters or scenes too, but have a terrible tendency to go for very very very short chapters sometimes. ;)

Thanks for replying. Pretty good progress on a daily basis, that is!

Great post, Claire! I tend to work on a few different projects every day; so I could write 2,000 words for a chapter of the novel, 800 for a newspaper article and perhaps 600 for a blog post.

As you say, "it depends"! x

I tend not to aim for a number-count per day, but I do like to write a chapter a day. Generally the chapters work out somewhere around 3K words each, although some can be as short as 2k while others can go up to 4.5k.
